Interview with Philipp Jelenska

Philipp Jelenska is a Vienna born Photographer with polish roots who started his career in the fashion and beauty industry early on in front of the lens. This gave him the opportunity to gain international insight and see the industry from a different perspective. It also allows him to harmonize easily and quickly with his own models, thus achieving the best result. He begann his apprenticeship as a photographer at the age of 17 and from then on has been living his passion behind the camera.

Philipp is best known for his expressive and aesthetic pictures, which are a mixture of commercial beauty and art. His unique and remarkable work is defined by his use of shadow and light and his love for playing with contrast. If you have to choose one word to best describe his photographs it would be glamorous.

His work has been published in numerous prestigious magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, L’Officiel, Marie Claire, Tatler, Vogue, and …

Beside his editorial work, Philipp has also done commercial/advertorial work for various clients such as Chanel, Chaumet, Dior, Guerlain, Harvey Nichols, L’Oreal, Schullin, Urban Decay and Van Cleef & Arpels.

On top of that he has received the Vienna Fashion Award as Photographer of the Year 2019.

Philipp Jelenska es un fotógrafo nacido en Viena con raíces polacas que comenzó su carrera en la industria de la moda y la belleza desde el principio frente a la lente. Esto le dio la oportunidad de obtener una visión internacional y ver la industria desde una perspectiva diferente. También le permite armonizar fácil y rápidamente con sus propios modelos, logrando así el mejor resultado. Comenzó su aprendizaje como fotógrafo a los 17 años y desde entonces ha estado viviendo su pasión detrás de la cámara.
Philipp es mejor conocido por sus cuadros expresivos y estéticos, que son una mezcla de belleza comercial y arte. Su obra única y notable se define por su uso de la sombra y la luz y su amor por jugar con el contraste. Si tiene que elegir una palabra para describir mejor sus fotografías, sería glamurosa.

– Photography style that best represents you.

If I had one word to best describe my work, it would be “glamorous“. I love a WOW effect in pictures.

– 3 photographers that inspire you.

I admire so many photographers but if I had to chose it would be Steven Klein, Mert and Marcus, Ben Hassett. I love that all their work is recognizable. That´s what I want to achieve as well, my own signature look.

– Project you would like to do.

My absolute career goal is a perfume campaign. I love to go into Sephora or duty free shops at the airport and just look at all the campaign images. They are magnetizing.

– Is there improvisation in your photographs or your pictures are well thought out in advance?

I always go on set prepared, meaning that I have a moodboard and an idea of how the shooting should go. But in the best case we get so inspired that we actually create something different out of the mood on set.

– What do you like most and what do you like meast about your profession?

The best part is obviously being creative. Before I knew I wanted to be a photographer, I was sure that I can’t have a 9 to 5 job. I love to collaborate with different people and to travel a lot.
I never enjoyed retouching. Although I did it for a very long time myself, it took out all the energy and was very time consuming. Best decision I mad was working with a retoucher. But I do enjoy doing my filters, creating my look.

– What do you like to express in your photographs?
I want people to not be able to stop looking at my pictures.

– What advice would you give to someone who wants to start in photography?
Practice as much as you can, find a good team and always evolve. But also don’t be too hard on yourself, if a shooting doesn’t turn out the way you expected it to. Just make it better the next time.

- Estilo de fotografía que mejor te represente.
Si tuviera una palabra para describir mejor mi trabajo, sería "glamuroso". Me encanta el efecto WOW en las imágenes.
- 3 fotógrafos que te inspiran.
Admiro a muchos fotógrafos, pero si tuviera que elegir serían Steven Klein, Mert y Marcus, Ben Hassett. Me encanta que todo su trabajo sea reconocible. Eso es lo que quiero lograr también, mi propio look característico.
- Proyecto que le gustaría hacer.
Mi objetivo profesional absoluto es una campaña de perfumes. Me encanta ir a Sephora o a las tiendas Duty Free del aeropuerto y mirar todas las imágenes de la campaña. Son magnéticas.
- ¿Hay improvisación en tus fotografías o tus imágenes están bien pensadas de antemano?
Siempre voy al set preparado, lo que significa que tengo un moodboard y una idea de cómo debería ir el rodaje. Pero en el mejor de los casos nos inspiramos tanto que en realidad creamos algo diferente con el ambiente del set.
- ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta y qué le gusta de su profesión?
La mejor parte es, obviamente, ser creativo. Antes de saber que quería ser fotógrafo, estaba seguro de que no podía tener un trabajo de 9 a 5. Me encanta colaborar con diferentes personas y viajar mucho.
Nunca me gustó retocar. Aunque lo hice durante mucho tiempo, me quitó toda la energía y consumió mucho tiempo. La mejor decisión que tomé fue trabajar con un retocador. Pero disfruto haciendo mis filtros, creando mi look.
- ¿Qué te gusta plasmar en tus fotografías?
Quiero que la gente no pueda dejar de mirar mis fotos.
- ¿Qué consejo le daría a alguien que quiera iniciarse en la fotografía?
Practica todo lo que puedas, encuentra un buen equipo y evoluciona siempre. Pero tampoco seas demasiado duro contigo mismo, si una sesión no sale como esperabas, sólo hazlo mejor la próxima vez.
